Both my daughter and her boyfriend are personal trainers. They majored in adult fitness. They studied foods, vitamins, etc... and the benefit on the human body. They also studied kenetics learning the use of certain muscle groups and how to exercise each muscle for it's full potential use. They also did a lot of study on their own as well. They are very much the dedicated athlete. There are also certifications needed in addition to a degree at most gyms. Many gyms do not require a degree to be a personal trainer but they do require certification. A degree is considered a "plus". Check your local area to find out what the requirements are. If you are looking to be a personal trainer for professionals, then a degree would certainly help you. Hope this helps

Exercise Sciences is a common major amongst personal trainers. But most personal trainers don't have a degree, they just get certified.
