Sony makes decent computers, but Alienware is probably the best. Dell is known for harddrive failures, Gateway and HP are known for mickey-mousing the internals so small parts like heatsinks are permanently attached to important parts like processors and one cannot be replaced without replacing the other. Also Gateway and HP like to fill up all your RAM slots (ie. if you have 1gig ram they put in 4 x 256 modules rather than 2x 512 leaving 2 free, this way when you want to upgrade you have to replace all four to get a significant change in memory, which by the way is proprietary and overpriced). I build my own now. I know every part in my computer and its easy to upgrade and repair without buying a new one. It cost me around the 1000 dollars gateway wanted to charge me to upgrade to 1 gig ram and i built a 2 gig system with dual 19" monitors.

Alienware has high-performance computers, for between $2000 to $3000 USD. For even higher performance machines, look up Falcon Northwest. These start at around $3500 USD.

You could also do a little research and build your own killer machine for less...

The companies are pretty competitive. They are all good. Remember when buying, you get what you pay for.. You can't expect very much from a basic computer for $500.
