No. The "government" is trying to make amends for its arrogance and neglect at having enough people trained in Arabic to actually gather intelligence in Arabic speaking countries.

Had we had more than a handful of Arabic linguists on the payroll one of them may have been able to translate for the President:

"Mene, Mene, tekel upharsim!"

Earf!

I don't think it's funny at all. I think it's a step in the right direction. I myself speak several languages fluently, including Hebrew and Arabic. Arabic is spoken by at least a half billion people world wide, and like Cantonese and Mandarin, can be used by business people to to facilitate better relations, trade and understanding. When I went to school in England I remember French and German being mandatory lessons. I can travel to many countries and be secure in the knowledge that I will not be in a vulnerable position either in business or personal security, because I don't understand the locals. If you could explain in Arabic why we think the way we do, is that not a good thing? if you could read Arabic papers and understand Arabic media, wouldn't that be better than relying on the Government to explain it any way they wish? Everyday we hear reports from the English speaking media about how Muslims hate us, yet if you were to speak to the average Muslim you would find it to be a completely different story, from the yarn that the Government wishes us to hear. Yes, there are a very small minority of what are referred to as fundamentalist Muslims that want wholesale war, not just with the West, but also their own people, whom they call Infidels because they don't support a war. In Fallujah, Iraq, several people have been killed and many threatened with death, because they don't support Al-Qaeda, or the local insurgents. They are glad that Hussein is gone, as they know he would kill them too if he were still in power, because they didn't support him either. Remember that Al-Qaeda and those like them ARE NOT practicing Islamic fundamentalism, if they were they wouldn't be killing innocent children, no matter what their political agenda was, because that is against the Laws of fundamental Islamic doctrine. The Prophet never sought gain through the deaths of children or innocents and I am sure that were he alive today, Al-Qeada would be trying to kill him as well. The doctrines that the correctly named Radical Muslims follow is an abomination of Islamic faith. And there is no need to be afraid that England will be renamed. It already has been, several times. I remember when it was called Albion, back when Glorianna was Queen. History knows her as Elizabeth the first. I personally feel that if our children are encouraged all over the planet to learn other cultures, languages and histories, we will live in a far better world. It's not about tolerance, as that word just means I haven't found a way to show you how much I loathe you yet. What we need to get our heads around is Acceptance for each others differences, because when you get right down to it, we aren't all that different. We just think we are.

I wouldn't say it's funny. I think they should concentrate more on teaching non English speaking kids (and adults) to speak the language of the country they are living in out of common courtesy. I know if I was living in a non English speaking country I would learn the language so i could effectively converse with the inhabitants.
There's nothing worse and more frustrating than trying to communicate with someone who doesn't speak English, especially for someone like me who comes into contact with such people at work on a regular basis.
This is not about destroying a persons culture or 'rights' it's about courtesy and respect for others which this country is severely lacking.
We are also too afraid of being branded racist by asking people to make some changes to their behaviour and that's got to be wrong!

Stop reading 'news'comics! The government don't want all kids to learn Arabic. It was suggested that Muslim children in the UK would be better equipped to argue against radicalism and might also do better at school if they were offered Arabic lessons. It is like children from Wales being offered Welsh lessons.

Not at all. The Middle East is becoming a huge center for commerce in Asia. Doha, Dubai, and Riyadh are favorable places for investment. All of their economies are on the rise and they don't have to worry so much about their oil running out with all of these foreign companies working in the area in non-oil related fields. Arabic is spoken by many people in the world. So it makes a lot of sense to teach our kids Arabic.

Its a good idea as in 10 years time we will own the whole of Asia !

So they want us to learn how to say ( Do you have any last words before i blow your brains out ? )

Lol , Sorry just a joke , but the government is just a big joke . Total waste of time if you ask me .

We should keep learning languages like Spanish German and French still ! But maybe change that starting age to 5 , as we don't start to learn it till the age of 12 witch in my mind is to late to get really good at it !

They don't even teach the children to read or spell properly, not to mention learning Arabic. What a farce!

yes i do, what the point, when we don't need their oil anymore, they will revert back to third world countries. If we are going to teach another language then Spanish is a far more useful or maybe French, but i have my reservations about that, as the French should learn English and bow down to us Brits !!

I think it is important to teach all languages in our schools and we now work and trade and travel within the whole world.
It is also just as important to retain our own identities and stop dampening down our own culture and religions and our government should show as much respect for us as well as new arrivals.

Nothing that our government of traitors does surprises me. Since taking office, their agenda has been the destruction of our national culture together with control and regulation of the population not previously seen outside a Communist country.
