Short term goal: Whatever you are working on, become better at it.
Long Term Goal: Become a better asset for the company.

It's a BS answer, but he asked a BS question.

searcher you have it all wrong. I've answered that question truthfully and BS'd the person asking. Its a question they love to ask in interviews for formalities. Mostly there looking to hear your answer how you present it etc.. Most asking if have 0 idea why other then its a typical question to ask. I've asked the HR he said he asks it basicly to try and get a better feel for the person he dont care about the answer but more how the guy delivers it etc..

I hate that question. I'm at the point these days where when asked i answer it pretty honestly. Short term get paid long term be bloody wealthy but i'll settle for food on the table if thats all that happens in 5 years.

I've never had a boss make my job and better or worse based on this question. I suppose if you said well short term i'd like to make 6.25 an hour and long term I'm hoping I'll see 8 an hour and maybe have some neato responsabilities perhaps in 5 years you'll see that but i doubt it has anything to do with your answer.

Another favorite along the same lines is what are your goals. I answre this one now i have none. they ask none? all baffled. I reply yeah I'm married have a wife kids i make an ok buck i'm pretty cozy with how things are i wouldnt mind maken more doing more etc.. but i'm also happy with how things are I feel I've achieved a lot for my age etc..

That sort of depends on what you want out of your IT career.
Some companies really look out for their employees (like mine) and help them with training and career progression. It's up to you. If you want to be a Project Manager in the long term, then say so and if your employer is any good, they will provide opportunities for you to get to your desired position. Short term usually is only in the next 12 months or so and usually entails learning the systems that you're working on really well so that you can become a good team asset.

Actually, it's not a BS question.

Goals are what makes you work towards something.

Think about a project you would like to do short term (within the next 6 months) and think about something you would like to do in 5-6 years. Your boss may be looking for a way to allow you to work towards something you want to do. Unless all you want is a paycheck, this is your opportunity to see if you can work on something you really want to work on.

This is what works for me:
Short term: To be hired for this position and to learn everything I can about it and do the best job possible.
Long term: To improve on what I do and move up in the company as I prove myself.
Good luck!
