The "Shape" of the vapor barrier around the object is the same shape as a chicken egg...the same shapes as a falling drop of water...which is the most aerodynamic...

It depends on how the moving object is displacing energy, is it moving in one direction? Is it emanating from an origin?

Directional = Cone
Emanating = Sphere or Ellipsoid (depending on a few factors)

the speed of sound in a gas? (which gas, what temperature and what pressure)
