If you're growing fungi in a petri dish with agar, clearly it will grow up as well as out, so would it be possible to limit the space above the fungus, ie place a lid over it at a certain distance from the agar, so that it will just grow outwards, or will this affect the overall area result?

It's for coursework where we have to see how much the fungus will grow with different amounts of food, but the experiment won't be valid due to the problems in measuring the height of it. I was wondering if there was a way of limiting that problem.

if the hyphae get too long, they will hit the cover and get smushed down a little bit. if you let it overgrow, though, it will sporulate and you'll get progeny on your plate. i wouldn't let it grow that long. as soon as you see growth, it's viable enough to do what you need to do with it. are you seeing how high it will get or something?
