i have an illegal(no permits) in-law unit in my house with a tenant in it. apparently somebody turned me in and i got a letter from the building inspector demanding to see the property or else i will have to deal with punitive action by the city. what will happen if i ignore the letter? what are my chances that this issue will go away? what is the best way to handle this situation? thank you.

ignoring the letter will not make it go away, unfortunate but some one has turned you in you have two problems an issue with an illegal unit plus a tenant within the illegal unit

do nothing and you can be hit with serious fines, most likely you need to get ride of the tenant, open up the illegal unit of your house so looks like one house, then take on the inspector

yes you will be in trouble. No it won't go away. You have to let the inspector inspect it. Then you will probably have to bring it up to code.

You will get fined, it was reported and it won't be swept under the rug.
