Humans lived among volcanoes long before there were scientists actively studying geology and volcanoes. They developed stories and myths about them. For example, the Romans and earlier Greek cultures thought that Stromboli was the opening to the underworld.
The oldest descriptive reports of a volcanic eruption was by Pliny the Younger, describing the eruption of Mt Vesuvius that killed his uncle Piny the Elder in 79 AD: http://volcanology.geol.ucsb.edu/pliny.htm
