Which particular invasion of Italy are you referring to?

I'm going to assume that you refer to the Allied invasion of Italy during World War II

It was important for a couple of reasons.
First it, in theory, opened a second front the Germans had to deal with. This was something the Russians had been demanding for a while. Unfortunately the "soft underbelly of Europe" turned out to be quite tough to get through, and didn't divert as much German troops as was hoped.
But the other important effect was the extra experience it gave Allied forces in amphibious warfare, and fighting the Germans in general.
