It really depends on the country you're in as well. Some are more liberal than others in the application of religious control within their governmental decision making. Without doubt the most coservative I have been in is Saudi Arabia. Saudi women cannot own property, cannot drive, cannot vote, cannot be seen with a man other than her husband in public, and if so chaparoned by a family member, must wear a bhurka, you cannot find alcoholic beverages, or pork anywhere....etc.

However in Bahrain, women do not need to wear a bhurka, (unless their particular sect states that they must), they can drive, they can walk down the street in groups of friends, I believe that they own property as well, you can drink in a bar, ...it's just a lot more comfortable. In fact during the weekends (Wednesday and Thursday) people come over from Saudi Arabia via a 24 mile bridge that connects the two nations, and have a blast. They tell you that, "Allah cannot see what happens in Bahrain, because there is a cloud that covers it". How convenient. It proves that they want to enjoy the same things that anyone else does.

But things are changing. There are new laws and new introductions into Arabian society giving women more power. In fact in Saudi Arabia there is a big movement to elect women into politics, and business leadership positions, after all they are educated, too. They are just on the cusp of this transition now.

Anyone wishing to understand Islam must first separate the religion from the cultural norms and style of a society. Female genital mutilation is still practised in certain pockets of Africa and Egypt, but viewed as an inconceivable horror by the vast majority of Muslims. Forced marriages may still take place in certain Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities, but would be anathema to Muslim women from other backgrounds.

Indeed, Islam insists on the free consent of both bride and groom, so such marriages could even be deemed illegal under religious law.

A woman forbidden from driving a car in Riyadh will cheerfully take the wheel when abroad, confident that her country's bizarre law has nothing to do with Islam. Afghan women educated before the Taliban rule know that banning girls from school is forbidden in Islam, which encourages all Muslims to seek knowledge from cradle to grave, from every source possible.

i agree wid sum1 who said it depends on the islamic country ur stayin in. SA is highly conservative coz its a holy city whereas if u visit Dubai, kuwait, bahrain, oman etc u will find muslim women playin a highly important role in developing the country. they're even seen as role models 4 the aspiring teenagers.i live in an islamic country n no nothing is forced on me nor my rights are taken away.

Any money or property owned by women is theirs to keep, and they are not obliged to share it. Similarly, in marriage, a woman's salary is hers and cannot be appropriated by her husband unless she consents

The Prophet instructed that women have the right to own property, to choose their own partners, and have equal rights to education. In accordance with prevailing culture, these rights became transformed into the duties of women to take care of children and remain in the house. This is not all that different than a century ago in America where women were expected the duties of "Republican Motherhood," which did not take them beyond the household sphere.

Her husband is not her master; a Muslim woman has only one Master, and that is God..

Learned today on the radio, that the Muslims in England and they are making efforts for America as well. To change their school systems to co inside with Muslim teaching.

The Muslims schools have segregated classes. The girls are looked upon as lower class, and they do not allow the girls to be educated with the boys, They have separate classes.

You give me the thumbs down. Fine with me.

But, dear ones, go and open your eyes, and check it out for yourselves.

"Things are a lot worse now, there's no security, women cannot go out, cannot express themselves, the veil has become compulsory for Muslims and Christians. If you walk on the street without a veil now you can get killed. I was insulted just standing on my balcony because my hair was showing."

The plight of Afghan women has improved little since the fall of the Taleban, according to the human rights organisation Amnesty International. During the war against the Taleban, world leaders said the conflict would liberate Afghanistan's women, yet many today are as oppressed as ever.

Just a sidenote - Christian teachings are just as subversive to female autonomy/disrespectful to women as are muslim teachings. Religious brainwashing. 'Women subit to male authority' and all that total B.S. Nothing makes me angrier than seeing a woman buy into this stuff!
