i would say get a new one as they have upgraded to the dual-core processors and they are much better for multi-tasking. building up the old one will suffice if you don't mind being a little "patient" but depending on what you have to spend on your modernization efforts, you might be better off with my original recommendation.

At this point you'd be better off getting a new desktop, unless you're good at adding new RAM and buying a large capacity external hard drive. You also will want to add a newer video card if the one you have now came with the Dell. That might work for you. On the other hand, buying a new pc will give you what you need right from the start, depending on how it's configured. If you do buy a new one, keep in mind it'll probably have Windows Vista as an operating system....and you should avoid the Home Basic edition....go with the Premium version or better. Rather than me list a preferred pc for you, click on the below link and see a very good listing of gaming pc's and ratings. Hope this helps.

A rule of thumb every PC owner should know is a computer 4 1/2 to 5 years old and older is not worth fixing. Better invest in a new computer. You will be surprised at the overall performance difference of these two computers that are 5 years apart.

There have been so many new upgrades that are probably not comparable with a computer of that age that have recently came out it that would blow those old computers away as far as gaming goes. DDR2 memory, the pci-e slots for your graphics cards- these things on newer computers will really help out any kind of gaming needs you will need, not to mention the new Core-2 processors.

I expect it shipped with only 64Mb of RAM. If you upgraded just the RAM to 128Mb, then it would be a brilliant Linux surfing box. Vectorlinux ( http://www.vectorlinux.com ) runs really well on slow old boxes like this. 450mhz is just fast enough to be a good Linux box - don't throw it away... give it to a geeky Linux friend!

Sell it for around $225 on craigslist, and use the money to buy a new machine. For around twice that you can get one on special at Kmart or Walmart that will be far faster and have way better compatibility for modern games. If you can save up $750 or $1000 you can get something truly AWESOME!
