I'm an American born Chinese and have lived in the US all my life. Family is from Hong Kong and China and I couldn't care less about what happens. My only concern is for how my portfolio will be affected. Taiwan's history dates back just over 50 years. Does Taiwan have a legitimate claim to ethnic distinction from China?

Im Taiwanese and I think things should just stay where they are right now. The taiwanese government is corrupted with the President only thinking about bringing independence to the country. I am sure alot of Taiwanese people supports the idea of independence as we do not want to get mixed with the chinese (It's a nation thing). In my view the two countries are really close together and maybe ONE day. They can live in peace and not have warfare tension between them. O_O

I too am an ABC and this is an issue I really care about and follow on a daily (sometimes hourly) basis.

To say that people living in the Republic are ethnically distinct from those living in the People's Republic is like saying that citizens are New Orleans are ethnically distinct from the rest of the US because of Canjun food.

China (politics aside for a moment) has always been a diverse geographical entity. In fact, China had been ruled by minorities/foreigners for 365 years (Yuan and Qing Dynasties)!

For the Taiwanese to claim that they are so ethnically distinct that they should form their own nation is not only haughty but completely ridiculous.

The PRC's stance on Taiwan is that the island should either be a part of China or part of the Pacific Ocean. In other words, do not push for independence.

No I'm not Chinese, but to America Taiwan IS an independent nation and the US would militarily defend Taiwan from any Chinese military attempt at occupation.

I am part chinese. And I imagine Taiwan as our hawaii or puerto rico or something. It certainly is connected to us, and they are ethnically the same, but they do have their own culture, their own language, taiwanese. But actually every different part of China has there own special culture and dialect. China has plenty of land already, so if Taiwan wants to be independent thats fine, but they are Chinese, its not like they're a totally different nation and people like Japan or Korea.

i dont wanna piss off my pro-taiwanese friends, but i dont thing taiwan has a right to separate

i dont understand y the U.S. is interfering, when in their history, the Union fought hard for national unity

the taiwanese, ever since the founding of the nationalists, were not as vigilant against the japanese as the communists (not that i'm promoting that party either)... wat's my point? i'm not sure myself^^ but wat i'm trying to say, taiwanese DOESNT have its own "culture"... i mean, they share the same history, the same descendants, the same language (unless you count the fact that theres simplified chinese), etc.

20 years ago, this wouldnt have been an issue
