Internal fertilization is a characteristic of mostly land based animals. The main purpose was to keep the sperm from drying out before it had a chance to fertilize the egg. Aquatic mammals, reptiles, and birds also fertilize internally. This type of fertilization also cuts down on the amount of damage the zygote will incur. Since there is some type of physical protection, uterus, egg shell the offspring will have a better change of developing into an adult. Also this cuts down on the excessive number of eggs and sperm used to ensure survival of the species.
External fertilization is suited to those organisms that live in aquatic environments fish, amphibians, clams, and many other invertebrates. Here the zygotes are exposed to the environment which makes survival difficult. So many sperm and eggs are deposited in the water to ensure the survival of the species. Externally fertilized organisms develop much quicker than their internal counterparts.

Internal fertilization and development means that the egg is fertilized inside the female's body and the young develop inside, also. Mammals have this.
External fertilization and development means that the eggs are fertilized outside the female's body, and the young develop outside, too. Fish and amphibians have this.
