I frequently go to http:/www.tigerdirect.com 's website to check out mother/main boards.
It is dizzying to say the least. Different socket sets, and most of all major price variations. i.e. $69-$250+
I have a P3 I want to eventually replace for light work, media and internet browsing applications. No major stuff like games, CAD, etc.
With that said, I don't need the best. Just something reliable.
Actually I do well with my P3 now, but it's maxed out and it has parts from about 3 or 4 different systems and who knows how long that will last.
Any suggestions, remember I'm on a budget here. I would like to stay well below a grand on this one.

if your looking for a replacement.
you can find deals at pricewatch.com
even dealnews.com.
these days its hard to justify spending money on pieces and parts
when a new computer with a 17 inch LCD monitor can be gained for under 400 dollars with rebates.

As you say there are a lot of different choices. You can build a system with a Core 2 E6400, a very nice processor for under $1000. I did it. I used an Abit IL9 Pro which I bought from Newegg for about $85, and that does the trick and still has a nice feature set. Then you can get a low end 7 series nvidia card (7300GS) 1gb of DDR2 and the rest of the parts for a very nice price. Also you can substitute an E6300 for an even lower price but good performance.

You can even substitute a pentium D or pentium 4, because if you just need the basics dual core is unnecessary but in any case still nice to have.
I also built an AMD socket 939 computer off of a Biostar NF4ST-A9 motherboard with a 3200+, a very nice combo very cheap. Of course, the 939 single cores are hard to find, so you could go with a dual core since they are cheap and you might as well have one.
