The Mayan calendar is not ending. The 12th Baktun of the Long Count calendar is ending. The 13th Baktun begins on 12-21-2012 and for some reason people have gotten it into their heads that it means the end of the world. It doesn't.
This particular calendar (the Maya had several) is basically like an odometer. For instance, today's date is written as 12.19.14.2.3. (12-21-2012 is 13.00.00.00.00) It's just straight math, counting the number of days since the beginning of this age (in 3114 BCE)
The placeholder names, from RIGHT TO LEFT (in reverse) and their values are:
1 kin = 1 day,
1 uinal = 20 kins = 20 days
1 tun = 18 uinals = 360 days
1 katun = 20 tuns = 7,200 days
1 baktun = 20 katuns = 144,000 days
So basically the long count is just math.
12x144,000=1,728,000 days
19x7,200=136,800 days
14x360=5,040 days
2x20=40 days
3x1=3 days
total: 1,728,000 + 136,800 + 5,040 + 40 +3 = 1,869,883 days since the beginning of time, or roughly 5123 of our years.
That's all it is. Nothing magical. It doesn't "predict" anything or make any claims to be anything other than an "odometer" for time.
Frankly, I think it's a pretty boring calendar. The Mayan Tzolkin (260 day sacred calendar) is my favorite and it's a lot more interesting.
Enjoy.

I think it's "end of an age" not "end of the world".
Why are people talking about it?
Because it's close to 2012.
Because they beat the da Vinci Code to death.
Because no one went to see Mel Gibson's movie?
From the link below:
This essay is not contrived upon sketchy evidence. It basically rests upon two facts:
1) the well known end date of the 13-baktun cycle of the Mayan Long Count, which is December 21st, 2012 A.D. and
2) the astronomical situation on that day. Based upon these two facts alone, the creators of the Long Count knew about and calculated the rate of precession over 2300 years ago. I can conceive of no other conclusion. To explain this away as "coincidence" would only obscure the issue.
For early Mesoamerican skywatchers, the slow approach of the winter solstice sun to the Sacred Tree was seen as a critical process, the culmination of which was surely worthy of being called 13.0.0.0.0, the end of a World Age. The channel would then be open through the winter solstice doorway, up the Sacred Tree, the Xibalba be , to the center of the churning heavens, the Heart of Sky."

Scary topic my friend. The reason people are talking about it NOW, is because we've been raised to deal with problems when they happen, not beforehand. (5 1/2 years is close enough)
Some people say that the Mayans say that the world will end in 2012. Is it true? I have no idea. However, I read somewhere (can't remember where :( ) that the Mayans are saying that this "new era" is not nesicarily bad, we're just cowards and have to assume the worst. (The Mayans didn't say the cowards part, I did: I'm sorry) It very well could be the end though, which is why we need to end the wars and stop killing our planet before it's too late! PEACE!

The Mayan calendar is based on epochs (for lack of a better term)
There have been 5 epochs recognized by the Mayan calendar. We are currently in the 5th epoch.
The 5th epoch (or world) is supposed to end in 2012 but just like the previous 'worlds' the end of one is the birth of the next.
It seems to me to be more of a symbolic ending and beginning. Its not as if the world is going to explode - simply change in a radical way. The 'world' isn't necessarily meant to mean the physical planet Earth but perhaps the planet Earth, the biosystem, human civilization, society, etc.,... as a whole.
On another note, the Mayan calendar is more accurate than any other calendar known to mankind. It is still more accurate at prediction of the moon cycle, the seasons, the sun rising and falling, the beginning/end of the year, the length of the day as it changes through the seasons, astrological alignments, eclipses, etc.,...
To me, it seems like something significant, yet seemingly insignificant will happen in 2012. Perhaps it one of those things that seems small at the time so we will say 'that's it? what a load of mythological crap'. Then 100 years later, people will say, 'yep - didn't seem like it at the time, but that was the turning point - we just didn't see it as such at the time because it took 100 years for the effects of the change to be noticeable.'
Remember apocalypse means 'lifting of the veil' This is a epiphany or revelation. Western society has applied the meaning of destruction to the current world.
Perhaps the destruction of the current world is the creation of another world. What do you have to fear unless your current position of power looses relevance without the existence of the current world (like church leaders, politicians, business leaders, etc.,...) Are YOU a church leader, politician or business leader? If not, you will benefit rather than be harmed. Even the Bible says this when is says "the meek shall inherit the Earth" What reason would you even worry if not for being NOT on of the meek... you know the same un-meek people that disregard and encourage others to disregard the inevitable whether in 2012 or not?
Am I crazy and full or voodoo crap or are you one that would either be harmed by change or are convinced by others that you will be harmed by change due to the convincer's self serving motives to convince you to believe as they do?
Remember - who's the last person to trust - the person that makes a profit in some way from you believing what they have to say. Look closely now - a few minutes of reading a single source on the internet isn't looking closely enough.

The Mayans were off by just a bit. The end of the world will be on April 1, 5,000,000,147 CE, when the sun, having run out of hydrogen fuel at its core, turns into a red giant and eats the earth.

The reason it's such a big deal is the Mayans were extrememly accurate in prediciting sunrise and sunset for many many years into the future past the time at which their society died out. They even predicted phases of the moon and such. Well all of sudden their calenday ends in 2012, so people are kind of worried because a) they have been very accurate in their calendar and b) thats in only 5 years...

Don't be an idiot.
The Mayans died out 600 years ago, and never had a chance to reform their calendar. A major Mayan calendar cycle coming to an end has all the importance and doom-making significance of Y2K. An alignment of planets never hurt anyone.

I think they were wrong, their world ended a long time ago. It really means nothing, just something for nuts and geeks to talk about. Don't get to worked up over this, You are the first person that I know that has even mentioned this. Relay, have an espresso.
