Something can not dissolve in water unless it is polar. Water pulls polar molecules apart, that equals dissolving. So, right away I can say Hg can not because it is an element. All others I would have to check their polarity. Hope this helps you answer your own question!

a) HCl will dissolve in water to form hydrochloric acid.

b) Cu(NO3)2 - yes. Most nitrates are soluble in water.

c) CH3CH2OH - is ethanol. Most definitely soluble in water.

d) Mercury - very soluble in water. (Practically insoluble.)

e) Ethanitrile. I got a bit stuck on this one and had to search (see link). It is miscible with water (i.e. soluble)

The first three, yes; mercury, no; and the last one maybe but I doubt it.
