Well, I am 27 and probably on the old side, but I guess it's not something I've been too interested in ever. I don't really have any need for it. I think a lot of people go in for a lot of different reasons. The biggest reasons may be the educational opportunities afforded by service; Montgomery G.I. Bill comes to mind. Paying bills and having housing is perhaps a little easier in the military if you live within reason. The other is a love of country and belief that it's worth it to make that sort of sacrifice. I know that my grandfather, who was in World War II, was a very patriotic, educated man when he signed on for his full commission. He was in for many years while teaching, though he remembers very little of it today. My father on the other hand was drafted after college and sent to Vietnam. I suspect he felt it was his duty, despite a feelign that the war was unwinnable. Now he's a pacifist. Strange, huh? Good question.

They have a strong desire to protect and help others!! I love them all for that burning desire in them!!! My family served in many wars and I have been taught to be selfless for the help of others and that is the most high Christ like thing anyone can do!! Christ did it for us all and they are doing it for their country so in my eyes they are working closer to that goal of being most Christ like in the end!! I agree and dispise how they get the crap end of the stick, but I do know that if they go in with their head's screwed on straight and live on base in their housing and save while getting all the stuff that they get for free, they will come out with a FAT chunk of change!!! A lot of the problem of the people that serve is they spend the money like crazy and drink it away to not have anything to show for it when they get out EXCEPT the GI Bill!!! I have seen it many times!!!

i'm not sure, i think that some people care a lot about a strong country. Pride I guess. And then they can be somewhat paid for it. People balance it out. Pride may be worth quite a bit. Even the greeks like a strong military did not care if they died, just had pride.

40,000 bucks just to sign up now. Plus college money, good pay, good food. Back when I was in you started out with 60 dollars a month. Now a Colonel retires with over $100,000 dollars a year plus medical, dental, px and commissary privilges, etc. Jobs are all going overseas, in the military you can go with it.

It's shameful. Our soldiers should be treated with dignity and respect and they are not. Benefits are being cut, research on brain trauma is coming to an end, and so on...

Does the term "braindead or desperate" come to mind. I have talked to several youth considering doing it and it is always a desperation move. they buy the lie.
