I need to make a detailed model of a cell membrane with all of the proteins and integral structures. . . Any ideas or thoughts on what materials to use and how to do this would be GREATLY appreciated.

Can you make it on a flat piece of cardboard or does it have to be 3-D? If you can make a flat cross-section, use something like clothespins for the phospholipids. You can put two rows of them with the legs pointing toward each other for the bilayer. Think of the functions of the other parts - a small cardboard tube for a channel protein, etc. Little balloons could be some of the surface proteins. Just look around the house and see what you have.

Try a piece of Styrofoam and a bunch of colored pipe cleaners that you can shape and stick into the foam. The foam would represent the phospholipid structure of the membrane and the various colored/shaped pipe cleaners would represent proteins, receptors, etc.

You should be able to purchase these thinks cheaply at any craft store, Walmart, etc.

Best wishes and good luck.
