Operation Torch allowed the Allies to clear North Africa of Axis forces and control, but more importantly, it gave them a dry run of an invasion before the real thing in Italy and France. It opened up a second front in Africa. It was the largest and longest (from bases in the U.S.) amphibeous landing to date in the Second World War. The territories invaded were held by the French who opposed the landings in some cases. It was the first combined landing operation among the British, Americans and Canadians. It saw the first ground combat between U.S. and German units when American forces moved eastward toward Tunisia. The landings took place in Morroco and Algeria. Having successfully eliminated the Axis powers from north Africa, the Allies were free to begin their Sicily, and Italian campaigns.
