I've cheered on all-star teams for six years, but when it comes to school try-outs I never make it. Any tips?

The most important thing is a positive attitude. You may not think that the way you look is important, but it really is. You need to wear school colors and make sure your clothes fit well. Shorts not too long or too short. No spagetti straps. If your hair is long, pull it back and put a ribbon in it. No nail polish. Wear just a little lip gloss and mascara and blush... that's it! Wear small footie socks with your tennis shoes. Work on your jumps and make sure they are as high as possible. Don't concentrate on the form so much as the height. Make sure your voice projects and you are not screaming. And most importantly SMILE the entire time... have good eye contact with the judges and make them think you know exactly what you are doing. Make sure you are respectful to all adults and others that are trying out. You'll make it this time.... make sure to let me know if you do! Good luck!

Truth is, the answer to this may depend a lot on your school and the girls you are competing against.
Where do you live? If you are in a competitive state, like Texas, it's hard for anyone to make it (I wouldn't have made it--you need gymnastics experience as well as high physical and mental endurance).
Where is program's emphasis? Focus on the things they focus on, whether it be voice projection, dance, etc. Talk to the coach, and see if she has any suggestions for this year that may help you make the squad. What did you do last year? Did you see other girls? Who made the squad, and what did they do? Don't become a clone, but use them as your inspiration.

Well if this is true, your school's team might be a little picky, maybe stuck-up. If you're able to make an all star team's squad, then you should be able to make the school tryouts easy. Just keep trying, do what you do with your all star squad. Be energetic, confident, not self-absorbed, and have fun.
