It's sort of normal, but it's not normal to be obsessed over it.

"Experts estimate that while there's about a 4 percent risk of birth defects in any pregnancy, only about 6 percent of these are related to anything in the environment -- meaning anything a woman took, did, or was exposed to. The vast majority of birth defects have a genetic origin."

For what that's worth.

NB that a lot of people you know probably have "birth defects."

I have an ectopic kidney -- in short, one kidney is in a place it's not normally in. I found out by accident; it's never caused any problems and certainly isn't expected to. I think the incidence is 1:1000.

Big fat deal. But, still a "birth defect."

Just to put that 4 per cent in perspective...

And FAS is pretty much just for alkies.

"A recent review of research studies found that fetal alcohol syndrome only occurs among alcoholics. The evidence is clear that there is no apparent risk to a child when the pregnant woman consumes no more than one drink per day."

But I think some worry is normal.

I sure hope so. I'm 16 weeks along and totally stressed about possible birth defects! it doesn't help when I watch things like the Discovery health channel and the incredibly weird things they show happening in pregnancies. Nevermind that the odds are about one in a million, I still get worried.

But, there isn't much good in stressing over things that haven't happened yet. Have you had blood work done yet? Or an ultrasound? They can rule out many birth defects through blood tests as well as your 16-22 week ultrasound. So as long as your doctor hasn't found any problems, all any mommy to be can do is hope for the best!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Oh its completely normal. Every pregnant woman worries about the welfare of her baby! I was having twins and i worried that i would have conjoined twins..or that one would die in utero. But trust me..worrying gets you no where! As long as you are doing what is best for your baby..(and hopefully NOT drinking) you should be just fine. And they can rule out a lot of genetic conditions while pregnant....(an ultrasound at 16-20 weeks) and by some blood draw they do as well. Talk further with your doctor if the worrying gets out of control..but chances are its just maternal worrying!!!!

You shouldnt be worring about that kind of stuff unless you are doing something to your body that would harm your baby like drinking. Which from what you wrote when you mentioned FAS sounds like you might be. I really hope that you consider that unborn baby b4 your habbits. Hope everything works out for you and the baby.

I think it is very normal, when I was pregnant with my daughter, I always had bad dreams that she was going to have problems. Everything I could think of I was worried she would have. But, I talked to my doctor and he assured me with another ultrasound that she was healthy and that worrying wouldn't make my pregnancy any easier :) so it is normal. cheer up hun, I am sure your baby is just fine. My baby girl turned out really really healthy. :) good luck :)

Of course it is! Just relax and know that your body is in the middle of something amazing - a true miracle.

If you are drinking, well, you know the answer to that. Same goes for smoking or drugs. If you want a healthy baby, you need to be a healthy mommy.

If you are worried, then STOP! cause that can harm your child. The doctor will offer you a blood test to check for disabilities. Take it! I was the same way! My baby was just fine.

It is normal to worry about all those things. You should talk to your doctor about those fears and I am sure that the doctor could help you ease the fears you have. I wish you the best of luck.

Yes, we're all like that.

Then you worry about them developing at the "right" rate.
Then do they have educational special needs.
Then are they growing up to be a "normal" person.
Are they safe when they go out?

The joys of parenthood.
