on my epson stylus color 850 printer, even after using the utility for cleaning the print head, it won't print print in black ink , but will print in color ?

sounds like it is clogged, dried out, or empty. You might call up customer service they may have a way to unclog it or just replace the black ink cartridge.

I had this problem with my Canon printer, where it would print black just not color. I did regular head cleaning 3 times and deep head cleaning 2 times and still the problem persisted. I was advised to purchase a new printer and problem solved. Don't bother yourself with a troublesome printer. Just go out and get a new one, there not too expensive.

*IF* you just replaced the BLACK cartridge.... Did you REMOVE the protective tape from cartridge?
If you haven't, then I agree with the 1st replier.
