People have told me a decent apartment within 3 miles of downtown SF should be around $1,500 to $2,000, but I keep seeing very nice apartments on Craigslist for $1,200... should I be scared of this "low" $1,200 cost?

I also don't care if it's a large studio or a one bedroom.

By downtown they probably mean the financial district, downtown on craigslist seems to mean the civic center (including the tenderloin). It's not AS bad as people think, but I doubt if you'd want to live there. There are a lot of drugs and prostitution in that area.

Re-run your search with financial district and I think you'll get results you're more insterested in.

Another party who answered a question said she found a good apartment through Craigs list. But also look at these apartments below that appear to be in decent areas.

You might try the Classifieds in the SF Chronicle's Sunday paper. To use that, it would be advisable to get the paper early in the morning and start working through the ads.

Best to actually take a look at the place and talk to the landlord or agent if you can. That way if you need a parking space for a car, etc. you can see what the possibilities are.

If you aren't familiar with the neighborhood, be sure to do some searching around. People are leaving the Bay Area, so rents are going down again - I say you should be able to find something decent for $1200 with no problem.

As ridiculous as it sounds that's about average rent for a one bed/ one bath or a nice studio apt.
