why should kids have cell phones???

yes they should, you never know when you need to call someone. I dislike how the schools in my area do not allow cell phones, there so many times where it would of been good to have a cell phone with me. Like when I noticed a traffic light was obviously broken, it stayed on red on one side, slow down on another side for 5 min without change while the the traffic light on the other intersection changed. I may be young but i would have the sense to call about it, but nooooo, they wonr let me take a cell with me.

Basically, they shouldn't.

It's not like I'm some anti-tech person, but how was it that I was able to survive just fine for 50 years on a standard "land-line" phone? I never had to be totally "in touch" with the rest of the world every waking hour. When I found it necessary, I installed an answering machine, but NEVER did I find it necessary to hang a phone on my hip, and I don't think kids need to either.

kids should have cell phones in cases of emergency (or at least that's how you sell it best to your parents). whine about the increased school violence, and the lack of pay phones etc. if you want you can also try to argue that (only if you tie up the phone line after 9 or 7 or whenever free minutes begin) if they get you a cell phone, then you won't be tying up the line. Just don't be annoying about using it, do not put it on speaker when you don't need to, do not talk overly loud, and if you live in the USA and get Nextel: DO NOT BLEEP!!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

I didn't have a cell phone until I was 30!!!!

When I was kid there was no such thing and we were always fine. We knew what time to be home, our parents trusted us to be home when they told us to and really ...who do you know when you are 8 other then your parents and 1 or 2 other kids!! Kids with cell phones I think its ridiculous. Parents molly coddling thier kids and giving in to thier every want and will.
Why do they need a phone....give me a genuine and real answer...

I want my kids to be able to call 911 at any given second that they need to .
Not to worry , im sure they wont be overpowered by a kidnapper. There's no way that kid napper would be able to take that phone from my kid . Not even a crackhead would be able to take his cell phone . Even though a crackhead would love to "cluck" his phone to his "connect" for drugs.

Kids have lived for years without a cell phone..We were given a curfew, if we were late we got grounded.

Kid don't need them. Adults are already rude enough with them...if they need to make a call then they should just use the phone in the office, just like I did. What makes today's kids so special?

As a parent I feel safer with my daughter having one - years ago I didn't need a mobile but the world has gone crazy - saying that she has to keep it hidden in case she gets attacked for it!!

They shouldn't! Not unless they are mature enough to handle the responsibility of a cell phone.... otherwise I would hand out two quarters for the nearest pay phone... they still have them right?

My nephew got one for his 12th bday from his grandma. I don't know they can be a distraction, but in case of an emergency they're really handy.
