i'm knitting a hat & it saysdo blanket stitch around the front of the hat

A blanket stitch is a type of embroidery stitch done to finish the edges... is this what you mean? You would simply get a tapestry needle (one of the large blunt needles) and sew with the yarn as shown in the link in the sources.

There is also something called a matress stitch which is used in seaming two pieces together. if this is what you mean, then follow this link: http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/basic_techniques/misc.php and go about 2/3 of the way down in the finishing section.
