Those who gave reasons to use gravel over sand gave good reasons, but there are many types of tropical fish that love to go nosing about the substrate, stirring up leftovers for snacking on. For those fish, a coarse-grained sand is much better, and a coarser grit avoids a lot of the compaction problems and is just as easy to vacuum as gravel.

Sand looks better, however if you don't have a hermit crab or something to stir it up then it isn't good for the water conditions. Gravel would be better suited. Crushed coral is only used to saltwater aquariums and it isn't even recommended then. If you have the room, look into getting a hermit crab, they're awesome. I have a 55gal saltwater tank with 1 lionfish, 2 clowns and a hermit crab. He's constantly climbing on stuff and feeding himis pretty cool too. I put some krill on the end of a skewer and he grabs it off the end and devours it.

Gravel. Sand gets too compact and will cause problems with your water conditions.

Gravel. Wouldn't sand just make the water dirty?

Definently gravel! It helps to produce the good bacteria in the tank that will help in decomposing waste! HTH!
