I don't think that Montreal vs Boston is the best rivalry in hockey, at least not presently. Right now I would have to say the Ottawa vs Toronto is the top. Calgary vs Edmonton I think takes top honors especially in the 80's. Montreal vs Toronto is pretty huge for all time. I always thought that Boston and the Rangers had a bigger rivalry than Montreal and Boston... NYI vs NYR is a good regular season rivalry. Edmonton vs Dallas in the playoffs has been good for all those years they kept meeting up.
There are so many good rivalries in hockey, Detroit and Colorado seem to be at each other throats when they meet up lately. The Calgary - Tampa connection could have been huge but the NHL made the lame schedule so they play each other once if your're lucky.

Historically there is no older rivalry than Toronto vs Montreal - 40 Stanley Cups between them.
Old 6 teams still have a special feel whenever they meet. Newer rivalries lack the long histories and realignment has cooled some and create other new ones. Leafs and Wings were always a hot rivalry. As was New York and Boston.
Hard to get excited about Nashville or Pheonix coming to town by comparison.

One of the best rivalies of all time is the Montreal Canadiens-Toronto Maple Leafs rivarly, however, that rivalry has not been the same recently. The Sens and Sabres have been starting to develop a rivalry in recent years, as well as the Leafs and Sens. However, I have to say that it has to be the Edmonton Oilers-Calgary Flames rivalry. This rivalry has always been exciting to watch as these two teams are constantly getting at each other, fighting, hitting, scrumming, it is always exciting to watch Calgary and Edmonton. Though the Ryan Smyth trade to the Islanders will probably put a little bit of a damper on that rivalry because of what he brings to the game, the Oilers will be able to still bring it against their provincial rivals each time they meet. Add to it that these two cities have absolutely despised each other since the days when the railroad went through Calgary instead of Edmonton, and you have the makings of a hockey rivalry similar to those of the Original Six days. Every night these two teams meet, they play hockey the way it was meant to be played, which is exciting to watch.

If I have to say I think that the Best Rivalry is between Toronto and Montreal but the Sabre's Vs. the Sens is pretty big and I am surprised that you did not say that is Buf vs Boston I mean historically, we hate each other. It has tuned down a bit since Ray and Barnaby are not on the Sabre's but it is still good.

Being a Montreal fan I would love to agree with you but, with both organizations not icing Stanley Cup teams ... not anymore. Boston and Montreal only support winning teams. Anything less, is not good enough. Want to see a rivalry go West .. Alberta. Edmonton and Calgary fans are so passionate about their teams this is a rivalary no matter where they are in the standings. These two teams battle it out every game, while their fans battle it out all year round.

At one time it was the rivalry in the NHL. But today the rivalry just isn't there. The biggest and best rivalry today is between the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Mapleleafs. Great hockey when these two teams meet you can sense the hatred between these two teams where as Montreal/Boston it doesn't seem to be there anymore, the games aren't as tense as they use to be.

back in the day it defenitely was the biggest and best. partially cuz they are 2 of the oldest teams in hockey, and partially due to the fact that don cherry is such a tool. but in this century, id have to say the detroit/colorado rivalry is more intense, because they always seem to be at the top of the conference. but rivalries dont really play a big part anymore (except to the fans), and for this i blame bettman.

It ranks right up there, but I think the all time rivalry is between Montreal & Toronto.
(French vs. English, Upper vs. Lower Canada, etc.) Any games between these two teams are always sold out, and are the toughest tickets to obtain.
