Your best bet is to use an air spray can. Some people like to use a vacuum, but it can give you problems with static electricity. If you are going to open up the case, be sure to look into safety measures, like wearing a safety bracelet. Even when unplugged, computers can be dangerous.

You should look on a site like http://www.laptopka.com/ to see exactly how to take your laptop apart to get to the fan area. Then once you get there, you should use a can of compressed air, available at staples or similar office supply store and in bursts of a few seconds, blow the dust away. You should use a straight object to hold the fan blades in place because blowing them with the air causes them to turn too fast for the bearings and could ruin the fan. Also, blow the dust off outside since your house would get all dusty. Note that during cold weather, the compressed air will seem like it stops working, you just need to warm it up again.
