Isn't that a wierd movie? Who would actually leave a child with a family like that? I'm glad the Dr's wife stepped up in the end and got help him get out of that hell-hole. She was the closest thing to a mother, the boy had.

Just watched this movie. You do realize it was based on actual events, right? You could probably even get a copy of the book written by the guy portrayed in movie.

Anyway, I've met people whose lives were pretty off-beat/strange. Maybe nothing as extreme as in Running With Scissors, but I'd imagine there might have been embellishment for artistic puposes.

A lot of educated, moderately affluent people were searching for Purpose and Self back in the Post-Disco '70's. I remember being amazed at all the programs they had out there for "self-betterment". (Rolfing and EST come to mind offhand). Thought about offering up my own program of self-betterment in order to facilitate the redistribution of weath, too. (I was more amused in those days)

I believe there is still the EST Institute over in Big Sur, in fact. So, people do weird things. The mother, in this case, was also on medication prescribed by a doctor who needed the income from having another ward (the father sent checks to the doctor). The doctor was a self-serving SOB who might have come to believe his own BS (the scene where he shows off his miraculous bowel movement, for example) and slowly receded into his own insanity.

I think the fact that it is a true story proves the old addage that you can't write anything as wierd as what happens in real life.

I felt mislead by the trailors and advertisements though. I did think it would be a "lighter" reflection on the mishaps of burroughs life.

it's a pretty true story from what i hear. i heard the fam is suing him bc they felt they were represented so accurately they were afraid people would recognize them. that is like admitting to being that nuts.
