Dueling Banjos was a scene from the 1972 movie Deliverance. The scene depicts Billy Redden playing the instrumental "Dueling Banjos" (a spinoff of the classic song Yankee Doodle) opposite actor Ronny Cox on guitar. Redden plays "Lonny"- a mentally retarded, inbred, extremely gifted banjo player.
The song was arranged and performed for the movie by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandel and was featured on the movie's soundtrack. It was originally composed by Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith and Don Reno as Feuding Banjos in 1955.

The Definitive version is performed by 'Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs.'

The banjo - guitar sequence - Dueling Banjos, or in reality called the Feudin' Banjos - was specially arranged and played by Eric Weissberg, accompanied by guitarist Steve Mandell.

The song was originally written Arthur Guitar Boogie Smith in the 50s, and was copyrighted by the Combine Music Corp.

Don Reno, and Arthur "GUITAR BOOGIE" Smith, co-wrote it, in 1955! According to my information, though, "DUELLING BANJOS" started OUT, as a "WORK IN PROGRESS", which was entitled "FEUDING BANJOS", - they CHANGED the title, later! And, YES, indeed, - I TOTALLY AGREE, with you, - it IS SUPERB!

i'm not sure but if you watch Big Fish, when Ewan McGregor enters the little town about half an hour in, there is a man on a porch playing that tune, that man is the original kid from Deliverance, i kid you not!
