My parents own a campground on a lake, and my 95 YO invalid grandmother lives on the property. Recently there was a major train wreck nearby, and it dumped a great deal of oil into the lake. My grandmother, the property, the campground business, and the tenants have all suffered from the damage from the wreck as well as damage from the cleanup crew sent to fix the mess. I'm not sure where to start as far as what kind of lawyers/legal specialties we need to ensure my parents don't get sued and everyone is fairly compensated for the damages they have suffered. Any suggestions?

There are two major issues and many sub-issue. First, there is the Campgrounds direct claim verse the tortfeasor(s) (polluters). Second, there are possible defenses verse the claims against the campground, if any. Both may require specialized skills (depending on the sub-issues) that may not be found in one lawyer.

The best place to look is in Martindale-Hubble and try to find a law firm that does envirnomental/property work. This firm is likley to have all the skills in multiple lawyers under one roof. Next, ask around, a lot. Most credible lawyers will advise you if they can or cannot take the case and may refer you on to someone else. Third, if you know how, do research on oil spills and see what lawyers or law firms are named. This can also be a starting point.

Overall, ask a lot of questions, like experience, cost, fees etc. Also discuss with your insurance company to see if they have any thoughts or interest in who you use. (They may even pick up the cost of some fees depending on the facts and policy.) Also, keep your expectations in order. The more you do, the more likley you will be satisfied with the help. Just calling one attorney and instructing them to "handle it" usually leads to a costly and unhappy experience.

Good luck
