Light travels as a wave, but when it strikes something, it takes on the characteristics of a particle - called a photon. Billiards is like light in that the photon can travel unimpeded, but when it strikes something, it acts just like a small round particle (or a ball). This particle then imparts some of its energy to surrounding objects, like other particles.
