Six months ago, I bought my first car. A few weeks ago, I lifted the interior carpet to repaint the floor. After laying the carpet down again, I noticed my break lights stopped lighting up when I pressed the pedal. The tail lights still turn on, so it cant be due to a burnt out bulb. I checked under the carpet to see if I had maybe cut any wires when I was painting, but I didnt seem to. What else could be causing this problem? Could it be a blown fuse... or would the break lights run of the same fuse as the tail lights? If it helps, my car is a '59 Ford Custom 300. My guess is the set up should be the same on most other cars though.

Check the brake light switch, it is on the pedal in most autos. It may be unplugged, or out of adjustment. The taillights and the brake lights are two different elements in the same bulb, so 1 can work and the other not. Also, check the fuse.

The switch for the brake lights is located on the brake pedal arm hanger. When you took the carpet out, you probably disconnected the switch accidently. Look under the column at the pedal hanger assembly and find the switch that comes in contact with the brake pedal, then reconnect it.

which break light are you talking about that don't turn on? The odomter one?

if it is, den there is a bulb in the odometer, very small, u have you take out the whole cluster and pull it out from teh back...

and for teh break lights in the back.. there are seperate bulbs for teh brakes and taillight.. so you would have to check them, and last.. if it is not any of them, its got to be a fuse problem... or unless u somehow took a ground wire off or something somewhere...
