You didn't say what kind of vehicle, but I'd say about every 30k miles. If it's got a filter in the transmission pan (not internal) change it too.

You should change out your automatic transmission fluid yearly. Typically a simple drain and fill on a yearly basis should be sufficient maintenance. If you wait, then a full transmission flush may be necessary.

If you do it yourself, simply drain the transmission pan if there's a drain plug. If not you'll have to remove the drain pan to drain the fluid.

Remove the drain pan after the fluid has been drained. Remove and Replace transmission filter.

Clean off magnets that are usually on the bottom of the drain pan and which accumulate metal particulate. Replace magnets in the same location.

Scrap off old drain pan gasket and replace.

Re-install drain pan and drain plug if necessary.

Fill fluid to the proper levels. Remember automatic transmissions have fluid levels tested when engine is running and transmission fluid has been warmed up.

Normally, with an auto tranny, you should change fluid and filter every year. If you drive in very dusty condittons, do it more often.
