1. You mix the antifreeze with water or it won't work
2. It's probably the thermostat
3. If the engine is overheating to the point of "smoking", it's already too late.

it could be alot of different thinks most foreign cars and newer cars have a little screw near the thermostat that lets the air out of the cooling system this sounds like what you have.Just fixed my mothers car 1996 pontiac grand prix because it did the same thing we replaced the thermostat and when car gets to opperating tempature turn this bleeder screw 1 turn air will come out when coolant comes out close the screw let run for a couple of minutes and the open the screw again till coolant comes out them close repeat till no more air comes out. its best to change the thermostat at the same time this is cheap to do make sure the new one goes in the same way you took the old one out because if you put it in upside down no coolant can flow to the engine and will overheat very fast make sure water pump is not leaking hope this helps.

It could be a water pump, a radiator, a collapsed hose and these three items wont be to expensive. Especially if you can do it yourself. However you probably don't have a clue, get someone you trust to figure it out and do it. It could be a blown head gasket and that could be very expensive, but first you have to have someone figure it out. Don't keep running it hot or you can ruin the whole motor. At any cost you're going to have to have someone figure out what the problem is.

Probably a stuck thermostat or even a stopped up radiator. If your radiator is still full of antifreeze you probably don't have any leaks and your water pump is probably ok so I'd look at the thermostat first.

Sounds like a blown head gasket. Do you also have alot of steam coming out the rear of the car? Do the heater/defrost buttons not do their jobs? Yes, this is very expensive, especially if you have warped the head from continuing driving the vehicle. Depending on the age of the car, it might be better to try to get something else. Hopefully, you don't owe too much, that would suck.

It is as easy as taking it to a radiator shop and let them fix the problem. You don't want to be working on it in the cold, hoping what you are doing is correct, or you have the correct part to fix it. Pay the extra money and get the job done correctly and save your engine, and ultimately you save a lot of cash.

it could be the thermostat, or like you said you might need a new water pump. I don't know the cost, but I know it would depend on the type of car.

Check the oil. I suggest taking it to a shop in your area to diagnose the problem. Good luck.
