Thanks to the people that helped I get it now

And I know it's annoying when people ask for help with their homework because they can't be bothered doing it theirselves but actually I'm studying for an exam and my teacher has been off ill so I was hoping somebody here could (which they did :) )

devide the numerator (top of line) and denomenator (botton of line) by the greatest same number to get a whole number (not a decimal)

EXAMPLE:

4/8 BECOMES 1/2

HOW? i divided the 4 and the 8 by "4" the greatest number i can divide these to get whole numbers.

2/squareroot2

You have to multiply both numbers by the denominator, to get rid of the root. Like, if you multiply the square root of 4 (2) times the square root of 4 (2), you just end up with 4! So:

2 x squareroot2 / squareroot 2 x squareroot 2

Would be..

2 squareroot 2 / 2

Then simplify. You can divide the 2 (not in the square root, the one in front) in the top equation by the two in the bottom, so the answer is simply

squareroot 2

multiply the fraction by root 2 over root 2 so then the answer will be 2 root 2 over 2 and you can simplify that to just root 2 over one or root 2...

multiply the top and the bottom by the root. In your example, that would lead to the rationalized fraction being 2root2/2
