I heard on the news today that when the UK changes to digital the only way to watch TV will be through Sky or cable. Is this true? Also it won't be free, we will all have to pay. If this is true, do you think we will not have to pay for a TV licence and how is this fair for my 82 yr old gran who only watches Count Down and Murder she Wrote?

No it is not only through sky or cable that you will be able to watch terrestrial TV channels. But yes once the anologue signal is turned off (which I think is going to be gradually introduced across the country from about 2008) then everyone will need a digital box (Freeview) to watch terrestrial TV! These are available from most electrical outlest and are fairly cheap nowadays!! They allow you access to some of the Sky/cable TV channels too.

As for HD TV these are currently not free anyway: They are currently only available through Sky and Cable networks in which subscribers have to pay extra to receive them. It is a long way off before HDTV becomes free for all people.

You seem to be confused by HD TV and Freeview. They are different. HDTV is not a necessity - Freeview will be!! HDTV just refers to a form of television that allows you to watch shows with much clearer pictures. It won't be compulsory to have a HD ready TV

Freeview will not be HD there was never any intention to provide HDTV for free. By the way if you watch low def TV on an HDTV the picture quality will most likely be poorer than watching it on a normal Low def set.
Freeview will still be available but it will not be HDTV its very difficult to send an HDTV signal via aerials.
