I've been dancing for years and there are times when I still can't get all the way down (it depends.) but the way I do it is:
stand parallel to a wall.
put your right foot in front.
slowly slide down and put your hands on the floor on either side of your body. hold this position for about 20 or 30 seconds , then let yourself fall (but not hard!) Then do it with your left foot in front, and then do a straddle- facing front and sliding your legs apart. when you do a straddle, put both hands in front and try to stay upright and not lean to the front. you should probably stretch a little bit first, otherwise your muscles will kill afterwards! try to do this like every other day and you will probably get better!

An easier way to work on a split is to do a jazz split, or bend your back leg when you feel a pull in your calf muscles.

You have to strech everyday, and be sure to strech before trying them. Don't bounce either. After streching, for side splits, hold your splits as far as you can go for 30 sec., rest 30 sec., then do it again. For center splits, do squats and the butterfly strech. Hold lunges and pike streches for 1 minute each and keep pushing it further and further.
