first, make sure that your computer is recognizing you ipod.

plug the docking cable into the connector on your ipod. you should hear a sound notifying you that a new device has been connected to your computer. A few seconds after that, you should see an icon for your ipod in the left side column of the itunes window.

If you're using the current version of itunes(v 7.2 i think) click on the ipod icon in the left side column which should change your main view to your ipod's properties. you should see an option called "manually songs" or something like that, you'll want to make sure that this option is not checked.

If it was, uncheck it, and hit apply.

If it wasn't , click on the button marked "restore ipod"

this will restore your ipod to it's original software, and restore all of the original settings.

then, you should be able to sync up your ipod to your library.

It might be set to Manual update. You can change it to Auto Update in the settings. Manual settings means you have to drag & drop. Auto settings scans for new songs and puts anything on thats in your library.
