It's a necessary trip because my family hasn't met my baby yet. If it wouldn't be something so important, I'd wait. Thanks everyone for your input!!!

If the flight is longer than 2 hours, I'd definitely cough up the cash for a seat for the baby (usually for kids under 2 its 50% of the regular cost), unless you have a spouse to share child holding duties with. 10 months old may be a bit young for this, but do you have a portable DVD player? We LOVE ours for long car and airplane trips. You can buy playhouse disney shows on DVD (Jojo's Circus, Little Einsteins, etc), so each episode is only about 20 minutes long (usually 4 episodes per DVD). Also bring a snack, doling out cheerios one at a time can take up quite a bit of time. Get some new toys, the novelty of something new will occupy child's attention for more time than an old toy. Books are also great. Take the amount of activities you would need at home for the same amount of time and double it. Also, don't count on him/her sleeping during the flight, I've purposefully taken late PM flights with my son hoping he'd sleep the whole time, and the newness of everything basically kept him from sleeping for the whole planeride.

Oh, that is so sweet, the family probably cannot wait to meet the baby. Bottle feed or nurse the baby during take-off and landing. That will help alleviate pressure problems in the ear. Babies and children are more sensitive to the changes in air pressure that occur during take-off and landing. If you have a DVD or laptop and the child will watch videos such as Baby Einstein or Teletubbies, take them. Of course bring every supply you need, diapers, wipes, cream, clothes, snacks, and food. There are lots of sites with travel tips for infants and children.

I read this on another site, the baby howled throughout the flight so the parent announced that s/he was really sorry but that child WOULD be paying other passengers Social Security some day!

It won't be as bad as you think! Don't be afraid to give a little tylenol before the flight to help baby relax on the way, and a pacifier or bottle helps them with controlling the pressure in their ears.
Also, even if you have not bought your baby a ticket, bring their car seat all the way to the gate. If there is an empty seat available, they will let you use it free of cost and you and baby will be much more comfortable. If there is not a seat available, they will store the car seat for you on the plane.
Have fun and good luck!

Get a seat for the baby. Bring along a FAA-approved "car" seat.

Sure, it'll cost a little to buy an extra seat. But for safety and comfort, I'd really recommend it.

When taking off and landing give the baby a bottle and make sure to be fully stocked with diapers and pacifiers. I had a 6hr flight from California to NJ when my daughter was 4 months.. It was easy no crying or anything. Just make sure to be stocked.

I am traveling to brasil with my 4 week old son in a few days...It is to show my friends the baby....I tottally understand you...If it wasnt important, I would wait too...Just try to relax the child and make sure you have snacks handy. You are lucky your child is older than a month...My friends couldnt wait, and I had to show my son off...

nurse at takeoff and landing... the sucking helps the pressure. Bring snacks and anything that entertains him for a while (my son loves anything with buttons that lights up)

Other than that... get a red-eye? hopefully he'll sleep through it?

Take a dummy. The pressure change on take off and landing is the worse part.
