Part of it I think is this "entitlement" mindset, he thought it was "his job" - it wasn't, it was the employer's job and this guy evidently wasn't cutting it. And instead of taking responsibility for what ever got him fired he played the Great American Blame Game, and took it out on others. Same thing why all our court system is clogged up with lawsuits over everry little thing life throws at ppl.

The only thing I can say to attempt to explain would be that I know how they feel. The workplace can be the most stressful place a human can be. I mean, your work is your money, your lifeblood. You sacrifice for it, devote to it, and depend on it. Unfortunately you must share this workplace with other people, whom are in competition with you directly or indirectly. It's like a king-of-the-hill type situation, where everything you say, don't say, do, or don't do is used against you by people looking to get that edge, make more money and gain more recognition.
Some people are more involved in this game than others. Some people play fair, while others just plain don't. All it takes for someone to lose their cool is to get screwed by such a person. Depending on the nature of the offense, and the instability of the person that's been wronged, you can end up with some messy endings(going postal, etc.)
To put it short, don't mess with a guy's paycheck.
