My dad's from Tennessee (in the south), he calls it all 'cola', other places in the south call everything 'coke', even if it's not... coke to me is coca cola. Pepsi's on this big campaign to distinguish itself from being 'coke', so anywhere that sells Pepsi products makes customers refer to it as Pepsi, and it's annoying as all get out.
My mom's from Massachussetts (in the north, on the coast), and she says 'soda'. When my parents lived in Maine, they said they heard it called 'tonic' every so often.
In the northern United States, it's called 'soda' or 'pop', though those who say 'pop' are pretty militant and will fight someone who calls it soda (not physically, verbally). I've grown up in the Inland North where the accent is terribly nasal and tight, so it always calls my ears to bleed a little when I here mostAmericans say 'pop'.

And there you have a brief history of confusion as to the name of carbonated beverages in the United States.

I call them bevvies or bevages with my friends, but I'm another story entirely...

In Australia, it's generally referred to as Soft Drink, sometimes Fizzy Drink, or by it's brand name, ie Coke, Fanta, Sprite, etc. Soda is a specific product - soda water.
