"Purchasing patterns" is a collective term used in the retail business world to refer to the things that certain groups of people (target customer) usually buy at a given time period. To determine purchasing patterns, business observers would have to look at data (sales figures) and would analyze these in terms of who bought what and when. It is a very useful tool in advertising and promotions , as well as in sales projections and merchanding.

Go to any big department store like Foley's, Macy's, etc. When you enter the main door, you'd likely to see the cosmetics department and/or the young misses' clothing department. This layout is a direct result of an in-depth study of purchasing patterns of the target customer (in this case, women ages 18-29).
