personality disorder (something that affects mood)- bipolar or s.a.d.
psychotic disorder (something that makes you crackers)- paranoid schizophrenia
Just examples. I know 2 people, one with bipolar, one with schizophrenia. The bipolar one just has mood swings, very quick ones that can be slightly extreme. The schizophrenic actually thinks that Rachel Stevens told him to buy garbage pail kid cards off ebay the other day, so he sold his xbox to do so... Slightly different i guess!!

Personality disorder encompasses all disorders including psychosis, which is obviously the most extreme one.
The difference between a personality disorder such as narcissistic, avoidant, etc, and psychosis, is that psychopaths/sociopaths do not have a conscience and are the most dangerous of all the personality disorders because of this.

There's is a movie with Wynona Rider and Angelina Jolie called "Girl, Interrupted." Wynona had borderline personality disorder(BPD) where she was only harmful to herself. Whereas in "Silence of the Lambs" the guy was very harmful to all the people killed due to his psychotic disorder. "Girl, Interrupted" was also an autobiographical novel. You definitely want to check out both the book and the film.
