What is the stereotype? I'm mostly interested in what non-Americans have to say?

Americans in general, are nice and friendly people. I just think that their social and economical system, enslaves them because they are constantly bombarded by ads telling them what to buy, what to eat, what to wear, etc. They are influenced by many of this stuff and tend to deviate them from other simpler, but necessary values like friends, family and even, themselves.

A few months back i talked about this with my acquaintance (American)...

"i'm warning you, it'll be nasty.
Firstly, there are not that many people seriously believing the following. The ones who are, are recognised as having prejudices and fortunately most don't agree with them.
But i suppose there is this "standard" American...
...who might not be that terribly clever and is kind of... naive....
...who's self-important and arrogant... thinks very highly of him/herself...is convinced of knowing better (think Bush!)...
...definitely a consumer...
...junk food! or only green salad...
...is either umm...big in diameter or very slim (in which case s/he thinks less of those who aren't)...
...is shallow...
...places outside image first. Always. In any given circumstances.
...is friendly, kind of shallow-friendly.
...talks a lot.
...doesn't really care about what's going on in world outside his/her nearest environment of interest."

i can't tell you how many people really believe this image to be true but i know for sure some do and it is so very stupid... Don't think for a second i agree with this crap!

Have a good day. :)

(Oh. MY opinion. Americans are people. Different from each other - like everyone else is. Whatever thing i think Americans may all have in common, i always instantly remember someone who completely contradicts this.
i just find stereotypes utterly silly!)

There are good and bad ones just like other nationalities. There are intellectuals and intensely ignorant. As for me, I had an American friend who taught here in the Philippines at the International School as a physics teacher. He's from Nebraska. I personally met his parents when they visited here. What's good with him is that he is eager to learn what's in the Philippines and adapt to the culture. Unlike other Americans who tends to bring what they have in the US, thinking that theirs are superior to others.
And there are also stupid Americans. Call center agents here would usually encounter them asking like "where in the world questions," i.e. Why is it I don't have my Internet connection? only to find out the modem was unplug! "What will I do when I arrive at the airport for my flight? Oh, my Goodness!!!! You have to stand at the door and wait till the plane leaves!!!

I am an American and have traveled a bit.
I think that most of the posters are right on in their observations of US citizens--especially the poster who states the truth about us as conspicuous consumers. Too sad.
I also dislike the way we lack respect for old things, as well as old people, but I think we are like Teens in that sense--our culture is not old enough to really value valuable things.
Good luck.

I'm from another country, I've been here for now 25 years and have a US citizenship. I think Americans are okay, nothing bad, nothing great. We are all just people, trying to do our best in our little lives. One thing we have to deal with, is that we have so many illegal aliens in this country, we have certain feelings towards foreigners. But then, that's what all Americans started, after all, this country was taken from native Indians.

If I tell how I feel about Americans, which I am one by the way, I would get a violation for insulting other participants.

They do not laugh at jokes, they merely say "Oh, that's funny".
