Generally brake jobs start around $60 (This usually consists of simply replacing the pads/and turning of the rotors or replacing the shoes and turning the drums) It depends on the style of brakes you have. The price goes upward from there. Typically you'll pay extra for semi-metallic and ceramic brake pads. Most places will charge $10-$20 more for semi-metallics and $20-$30 more for the ceramic pads. Semi-metallics will squeal more and can be very annoying on newer cars, but they will stop your car if you can live with the squeal. Ceramic pads are better in terms of noise, but from my experience ceramics don't last as long as semi-metallics.

The sooner you get the car in the better. If you're starting to squeal, the squeal plate has come in contact with your rotor. If it bites too deeply into your rotor the rotors will need to be replaced. This can cost anywhere from $20/rotor on up. If you get the car into the shop immediately, and they can simply machine the rotors, it will save you from having to replace the rotors!

Have your brakes inspected. Typically brakes need to be done on an axle basis. So you do both the front brakes or both the rear brakes at the same time, you may not need to do all 4 at once.

Depends on the model of the car.
