His greatness is the contribution to Science ,-Naturalism-
-Biology-in his;Theory of evolutionary selection. He set these theories forth in his book called, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life or "The Origin of Species",In short.- holds that variation within species occurs randomly and that the survival or extinction of each organism is determined by that organism's ability to adapt to its environment.
condensed;
1-, evolution did occur; -2-, evolutionary change was gradual, requiring thousands to millions of years;-3-, the primary mechanism for evolution was a process called natural selection; and four, the millions of species alive today arose from a single original life form through a branching process called "speciation."

Darwin identified a mechanism which explains how the multitude of species of animals and plants now found on the planet came to be here, and encapsulated it in a theory which is so useful and valuable that it has become the cornerstone of biology. The theory is the "theory of evolution", and it is now a proven fact. The theory supposes that mutations can occur, which may be beneficial to the survival and reproduction of a species, and that those which are beneficial will survive preferably to those that are not. For an interesting history of the evolution of life, see:

He studied the different species of birds in the Galapagos, leading him to establish the bases for the theory of evolution and added a rational to the concept of the survival of the fittest.

EDIT.

And well, I would like to clarify a misconception, Darwin did not say we descended from monkeys, he said that we shared a common ancestor with primates.

Charles Darwin wrote the definitive artwork on how earthworms flow soil. Oh, and he also got here up with truly some examples which strongly advise that a inhabitants can replace over the years -- sufficient so as that it may develop right into a clean species.

A freethinker and radical, Darwin often wrote his opinions and scientific treatises in verse. In Zoonomia; or, The Laws of Organic Life (1794–96), he advanced a theory of evolution similar to that of Lamarck, suggesting that species modified themselves by adapting to their environment in an intentional way. His conclusions, drawn from simple observation, were rejected by the more sophisticated 19th-century scientists, including his grandson Charles.

Science discovery, not to be confused religion opposition.

intersting fact;
Darwins grandfather actually proposed the theory of evolution however as there was absolutely no evidence at the time he was ignored. What Charles darwin did was find evidence than substantiated his Granfathers theory

He codified the Theory of Evolution...until he did this, the so-called scientific community thought that animals as they saw them at that time had been just like that since they first began.

He was the " father " of evolutionary biology. His theory of evolution by natural selection is the corner stone of biology. " Nothing in biology makes sense, except in the light of evolution ", Theodosius Dobzansky.

Not only did he discover the theory of evolution he challenge major fundamentalists within Christianity. He was a Christian himself so his theory did not challenge his beliefs.
