Gideons International is an evangelical Christian organization dedicated to distributing copies of the Bible over 80 languages in more than 180 countries of the world to those who might not otherwise encounter it, most famously in hotel and motel rooms. The organization was founded in 1899 in Boscobel, Wisconsin as an early American parachurch organizations dedicated to Christian evangelism. It began distributing free Bibles, the work it is chiefly known for, in 1908, when the first Bibles were placed in the rooms of the Superior Hotel in Iron Mountain, Michigan.[1]

The organization describes its link to the story of Gideon thus:

"Gideon was a man who was willing to do exactly what God wanted him to do, regardless of his own judgment as to the plans or results. Humility, faith, and obedience were his great elements of character. This is the standard that The Gideons International is trying to establish in all its members, each man to be ready to do God's will at any time, at any place, and in any way that the Holy Spirit leads."
In keeping with this symbolism, the symbol of the Gideons is a two handled pitcher and torch, recalling Gideon's victory over the Midianites as described in Judges chapter 7.

In addition to their well-known hotel-room Bibles, the Gideons also distribute Bibles to members of the military of various countries, to hospitals, nursing homes, prisons and also to students. A typical Gideon Bible or New Testament will contain:

Actually, most of the bibles are put there by the gideons, which is an evangelical christian organization dedicated to distributing copies of the bible over 80 languages in more than 180 countries of the world. I personally think it's a complete waste of time and money, which could be put to much better use. A lot of hotels have started to put a stop to the practice, and refuse the gideons access to the rooms to place the bibles in them, which I think is a positive trend.

It's irresponsible to leave copies of the bible all over the place, because someone could read it by accident and actually believe what's in it. I don't understand why people would do such a thing, but they do.

Some states supply the Teaching of Buddha, which is a great idea. I hope noone carries the Morman Bible, but I am afraid that at least one state has this extreme of nonsense.

The Gideons sponsor this. They give the bibles away to motels, they also are in a lot of college campuses giving away bibles

The hotels don't do it.
There's a group called the "Gideons" -- it's a religious organization that raises money to purchase bibles and place them in hotels. The hotels give their permission, but they don't pay for it (and they wouldn't).

Ever heard the term, "Gideon's Bible?" That's where it comes from.

Waste of time, effort, and money if you ask me -- but what the heck, I don't have to pay for it, and I never read 'em :)

They are put there by, I believe, the Mormons. It's just something they do for free.

The only people bothered by it are those who are very insecure in their beliefs about the world. They fear any conversation about their beliefs because they can't back them up.

I'm not religious, but I don't see having faith as a weakness. All you have to do in this life is treat others as you'd wish to be treated. Show respect for people who think differently, and they'll show respect to you.

Gideons paid for them

Because some people put it there because they want non-believers to pick it up and start to read it so that they will hopefully become a Christian.
