I work in a school system as a technology facilitator and deal with all of these of a frequent basis. Window's XP is best because it already has drivers (essentially needed software to run whatever you plug in like a printer, scanner, or USB flash drive) and you don't have to have an installation CD to get them to work. Also the newer windows gives you better options to make your system run faster, as well as being able to handle more complex programs and games.

The only time Windows 98 would be preferred is if you have a very outdated computer (say 6 years or older). The processor and internal memory would not be enough to run the more advanced program as well, and would benefit from the slower more basic 98. However, even then I would suggest moving up to Windows ME since it has a lot more drivers installed and functionality as well.

Hope this helps

Windows 98

A major upgrade to Windows 95. Introduced in June 1998, it included numerous bug fixes, performance enhancements and support for more hardware, including the Universal Serial Bus (USB). It added support for two monitors, which helps developers working in one resolution and testing in another. Windows 98 tightly integrated Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser into the desktop. Windows Second Edition and Windows ME were two upgrades to Windows 98.
Windows NT
(Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. Windows NT was introduced in 1993 as Version 3.1 with the same user interface as Windows 3.1. In 1996, Version 4.0 switched to the Windows 95 desktop and changed some of the dialogs.
Windows XP
The previous client version of Windows. XP was a major upgrade to the client version of Windows 2000 with numerous changes to the user interface. XP added improved support for gaming, digital photography, instant messaging and wireless networking. It added a personal firewall, and it improved the sharing of connections to the Internet. Although XP is a client operating system, it can function as a server in a peer-to-peer network.

Simply because its more user friendly, and mainly because of plug and play support which configures most of the devices itself, and no need to manually configure each hardware you add to the system
