Because they can't help it.

One of the common phobias (ie. fear of spiders, cats, dogs) stems from their parents or someone close to them from birth to childhood that it triggers fear or a phobia.

Like for example...mother is afraid of spiders, the child sees the fear and soon picks up the fear from the mother.

it's a complex field to discuss.

some people get direct phobias e.g. they were in a car crash and are now scared of cars.

others can get indirect phobias e.g. abused as a child and are now scared of swimming pools.

if you want to know more look into hypnotherapy books with an open mind

Who knows, I have a relative with a fear of buttons. Sometime regression helps, some believe it is to do with past lives.

I have a phobia of work. It's called being bone-idle.

My housemate at uni was scared of cotton wool and I had a colleague who was frightened of buttons. Don't know why, but I don't criticise. I'm sure they have some sort of reasoning which is perfectly rational to them.

The whole point of phobias is that they are irrational and bizarre, I can't think of one that isn't. I suffer from emetophobia (vomit phobia). Vomiting is of course extremely unpleasant, but why should I be so afraid of it? I dunno, it's bizarre!
